New Elephant & Castle High-Rise Contract For McMullen

McMullen Facades is set to continue its work in the Elephant & Castle area of London after securing a new circa £16m contract to deliver the full vertical envelope for The Highwood, a new 31-storey residential development that forms part of the West Grove scheme in Elephant Park.

McMullen has been appointed by main contractor Lendlease to work on the new high-rise tower that has been designed by Allford Hall Monaghan Morris Architects. The McMullen team will design, manufacture and install the fully unitised facade which features recessed balcony sliding doors and a glazed balustrade system incorporated into the unitised panels along with panoramic curtain walling and sliding doors to the penthouses. McMullen’s scope of works also includes the louvre panels, soffit cladding and the bespoke aluminium feature cladding which has been designed by the architects to echo the pattern of the Fibonacci sequence.

Benefiting from the early involvement and expertise of McMullen’s 70-strong in-house design and engineering team, close collaboration with the main contractor Lendlease, AHMM Architects and Buro Happold façade consultants has enabled the facade package to be optimised to meet the performance criteria, the architectural design intent and project programme. The design also includes a number of innovative ideas that the team have developed so that the façade works can be carried out whilst maintaining the highest level of safety and quality. McMullen are expected to commence work on site in early 2017.

West Grove is the second phase of the ambitious Elephant Park scheme which is a key project within the wider regeneration of the Elephant & Castle area of the city. Developed around what is the largest new park to be created in Central London in the last 70 years and featuring a variety of buildings and amenities, the West Grove district will create the two distinct neighbourhoods known as Orchard Gardens and Highwood Gardens. Standing at 31 storeys, The Highwood building is the tallest within the West Grove development.

The new contract for The Highwood is the latest addition to McMullen Facade’s portfolio of work in the Elephant & Castle area and follows the team’s earlier appointment by Laing O’Rourke to install the vertical facade package for the 23-storey Elephant Road development and most recently, the new 41-storey Two Fifty One, Southwark Bridge Road scheme. Sister company, Lakesmere, will also be working on the new Energy Centre for the Elephant & Castle redevelopment, which forms one of ten low carbon zones identified within London.
