Tidal Basin

McMullen Facades, part of Lakesmere Group, has worked alongside main contractor Carillion and key client HUB Residential to deliver the striking vertical envelope package for Hoola, a landmark new residential development in the Royal Docks area of London.

Comprising 360 high specification apartments across two 23 and 24 storey towers, the Hoola scheme boasts a prime location on Tidal Basin Road and offers breath-taking panoramic views across London, with sights including the 02 Arena, River Thames and Canary Wharf. These views have been further enhanced by the scheme’s attractive and extensively glazed façade, which features floor to ceiling windows, sliding glass doors and use of full width balconies.

McMullen Facades was appointed to deliver the vertical façade package to both towers and was responsible for the design, manufacture and installation of the bespoke pre-fabricated curtain walling and feature curved glazed balustrading, the design of which creates a rippled ‘wave’ effect to reflect the development’s waterside location near the River Thames and the docks. McMullen developed an innovative floor to floor semi-unitised system which incorporated the sliding door sets and moveable sun-shading screens.

Utilising the many benefits of off-site construction and drawing on McMullen’s in-house manufacturing expertise, the team worked closely with Carillion and the developer HUB Residential at pre-tender stage to develop a bespoke façade system design that has provided a fast track installation solution and has enabled follow-on trades to commence their packages much earlier than usual.

Hoola’s impressive design has been further enhanced by its green credentials, with the concrete frame towers acting as ‘super insulators’ by storing heat on warmer days to be released back into the apartments when needed. Excess heat from the neighboring Excel Exhibition Centre will also be pumped directly into the towers to provide heating and hot water requirements to the residents and remove the need for individual boilers that can be costly to run and maintain. Ensuring the thermal efficiency of the two towers and the building envelope was therefore paramount and McMullen’s in-house thermal engineering department played a critical role in ensuring the façade system successfully achieved the specific performance requirements.
