Architects are continually wanting to push the envelope with their designs as engineering knowledge and capability increases.

The challenge facing facade engineering is to continue to innovate and improve to come up with bespoke design solutions to meet these requirements, by utilising new technologies such as Building Information Modelling (BIM).

Using BIM we can construct a virtual building during the design phase of a project, which allows us to carry out clash detection and run simulations in advance of any manufacture or site construction commencing. Here at McMullen's we are using this technology allowing us to test components and elements for fit and function before manufacture commences.

The use of BIM to standardise processes and 30 modelling is expected to be mandatory for all government projects over the next five years. McMullen have already completed five projects to BIM Level 2, putting us well on track to meet the government's BIM strategy to complete all projects to BIM Level 2 by 2015.

Engineering the modern building facade

Engineering the modern building facade is a complex process involving disciplines such as structural engineering, thermal analysis, acoustic performance, building frame movements and maintaining air and water tightness of the building - and at the same time achieving the architectural design intent and aesthetics.

McMullen continues to lead the field by utilising cutting edge software and advanced manufacturing technology. We employ in-house a full range of professional engineering staff including structural engineers, thermal engineers, architects and mechanical designers. This allows us to offer the architect a greater range of materials and the freedom to express their designs whilst knowing that the building physics are all taken care of by a professional team of engineers.

Testing Icon

Testing

Many of the Curtain Wall and Window Systems we offer have existing test certification to meet the guidelines outlined by CWCT.

In addition to existing testing certification, we are able to offer a fully com pliant testing regime when a bespoke design is to be adopted. Working with our partners Vinci Technology Centre UK Ltd and Wintech Engineering

Testing would typically take account of the following test sequencing.

  • Air Permeability
  • Static water penetration
  • Wind resistance - serviceability
  • Air Permeability
  • Static water penetration
  • Dynamic water penetration
  • Wind resistance - safety
  • Dismantle Inspect and record
